Commercial electricianTenant improvementsIndustrial controlsThe main signs you need a panel upgrade are breakers that trip often, a panel that feels warm, buzzes or smells hot, no space left for new breakers, an older brand such as Federal Pacific or Zinsco, fuses instead of breakers, and plans to add a big load like an EV charger, spa or new AC.
Your electrical panel is where power from the utility enters the house and is split into circuits. Each circuit has a breaker. The panel also has a size, measured in amps, that limits how much power the whole house can draw at once.
A panel can need an upgrade for two different reasons. It may be wearing out or a known problem brand. Or it may simply be too small for what you run today. Sometimes it is both.
These signs point to a panel or breaker that is not working as it should.
Many homes in Sun City, Sun City West and the older parts of the West Valley still have the panel they were built with. It was sized for a different way of living.
Some panels are flagged because of how they were made, not how old they are.
New loads are one of the most common reasons for an upgrade. An EV charger, a spa or hot tub, a new or larger AC unit, a workshop, or a room addition can each need more capacity than an older panel has.
Not every new appliance means a new panel. An electrician can do a load calculation, which adds up what your home actually uses, and tell you whether the current panel can handle it. If it can, you do not need an upgrade, and we will tell you so.
You can open the outer panel door and read the label for the brand and amp rating. You can notice whether breakers trip often and what was running when they did. You can feel the outer door with the back of your hand.
Do not remove the inner cover, tighten anything or replace breakers yourself. Parts inside stay live even when the main breaker is off.
A single worn breaker can sometimes be replaced on its own. A panel that is a problem brand, damaged, or out of room usually needs to be replaced. A panel upgrade needs a permit and an inspection.

Not always. It can be one overloaded circuit or one faulty appliance. If tripping happens on several circuits or with normal use, the panel may be too small or wearing out.
No. A load calculation shows whether your current panel has room. Many homes can add a charger without an upgrade.
Yes. Replacing or upgrading a panel requires a permit and an inspection from your city or county building department.
