Generator Hookups and Transfer Switches

Generator hookups and transfer switches in Sun City and the West Valley

A generator can keep the refrigerator, a fan and the medical equipment running when the power goes out, but only if it is connected the safe way. We install transfer switches so your generator feeds the house without ever feeding the utility lines.

Good reasons to call about a generator hookup

If any of these sound familiar, call and describe it. We will tell you honestly whether a new panel is the answer.

  • You own a portable generator and run extension cords through a door or window
  • Someone in the home relies on oxygen, a CPAP or other powered medical equipment
  • You want the refrigerator, freezer or a fan to keep running during an outage
  • You were told about a cord that plugs a generator into a wall outlet
  • You are buying a generator and want to know how it should connect
  • Not sure what you need? Call and describe your setup. We will explain the options.
Never plug a generator into a wall outlet or the dryer outlet. It can send power back onto the utility lines and injure a lineworker or a neighbor. Run a generator outdoors only, away from doors and windows.
Sun City and the West Valley

Backup power for Sun City homes

Summer outages in the West Valley are more than an inconvenience, especially for anyone who depends on cooling or powered medical equipment. A generator helps, but how it connects to the house matters as much as the generator itself.

A transfer switch keeps your house either on utility power or on generator power, never both at once. That protects the people working on the lines, protects your generator and lets you power the circuits you choose without a tangle of cords. We help you pick the circuits that matter most and explain how to use it before we leave.

Questions

Panel upgrade questions

What does a transfer switch do?

It lets your house run on either utility power or generator power, but never both at the same time. That keeps generator power from flowing back onto the utility lines, and keeps utility power from damaging your generator when it comes back on.

Can I just plug my generator into a wall outlet?

No. That is called backfeeding, and it can send power onto the utility lines and seriously hurt a lineworker or a neighbor. It can also damage your wiring. A transfer switch is the safe way to do it.

Will a portable generator run my whole house?

Usually not, and it does not need to. Most people choose a handful of circuits, such as the refrigerator, some lights, a fan and any medical equipment. We help you pick what makes sense for your generator.

I have not bought a generator yet. Can you help?

Yes. Call before you buy, and we will look at your panel and tell you what will connect safely to your home.

Where should the generator sit when it runs?

Outdoors only, away from doors, windows and vents. Never run a generator in the garage, even with the door open.

How much does a transfer switch installation cost?

It depends on your panel, your generator and how many circuits you want to power. We look at your setup and give you a clear price before any work starts.
