Their known problems are breakers that may not trip and connections that can overheat where the breaker meets the panel. There was never a recall, but most electricians recommend replacing them.
Zinsco was a panel and breaker maker whose equipment went into many homes in the 1960s and 1970s. The company was later sold, and the same design was marketed under the Sylvania and GTE-Sylvania names. If your panel carries any of those names, this guide applies to you.
Sun City opened in 1960, and many of its homes were built in the years Zinsco equipment was in use. That does not mean every older home here has one. It does mean it is worth looking at the label on your panel.
Electricians and home inspectors have reported the same issues with these panels for years.
No. There has never been a Zinsco recall. The problems are documented by inspectors, electricians and testing, not by a government recall. That is one reason people are surprised when an inspector or an insurance company raises it. No recall does not mean the panel has been cleared. It means no one ordered a fix.
Open the outer panel door only, the same door you open to reset a breaker. Do not remove the inner cover. Look for these signs.
Whatever the brand, call an electrician soon if you notice any of these.
Replacement breakers for Zinsco panels are hard to find, and new breakers do not fix a worn or damaged bus. For that reason most electricians recommend replacing the whole panel.
A new panel also gives you room to grow. Many older panels are too small for central AC, a spa, a golf cart charger or an EV charger. When we replace a panel, we size it for what you use now and what you plan to add. The work needs a permit and an inspection.

No law requires it, but most electricians recommend it because the breakers may not trip and the bus connections can overheat.
Some insurers ask about Zinsco and similar panels. Check with your agent, and ask an electrician to confirm what you have.
Not reliably. A panel can look fine and still have breakers that would not trip. Heat, smells or scorch marks are clear warnings, but their absence is not proof the panel is sound.
