Question

What Size Circuit Does a Hot Tub Need?

From Solana Electrical, AZ ROC #341966

The short answer

There is no single size that fits every hot tub. The right circuit comes from the manufacturer’s nameplate and installation manual, which list the voltage and the circuit the tub needs. Plug-in models run on 120 volts, while most larger tubs need a dedicated 240 volt circuit. Every hot tub needs GFCI protection.

Start with the manual

Every hot tub has a nameplate, usually near the equipment bay, and an installation manual. Together they list the voltage, the power the tub draws, and the circuit and GFCI protection the maker calls for. An electrician sizes the breaker and wire from those numbers and the distance to your panel. That is why we ask for the model or the manual before we quote.

120 volt plug-in vs 240 volt hardwired

  • Plug-in tubs run on a standard 120 volt outlet. They still need a GFCI-protected outlet on a suitable circuit, often a dedicated one.
  • Hardwired tubs run on a 240 volt circuit. They heat faster and can run the heater and jets together, but they draw much more power.
  • Some tubs can be set up either way. The manual says which settings go with which circuit.

Why you should not guess

A circuit that is too small for the tub will trip or run hot. A breaker that is larger than the wire can handle will not protect it. Neither is a safe shortcut. Do not plug a hot tub into an extension cord either.

GFCI and the disconnect

Water and electricity call for extra protection. The CPSC urges GFCI protection for all hot tub and spa equipment. Hardwired tubs also need a disconnect within sight of the tub, placed where someone in the water cannot reach it.

Can your panel carry it?

A 240 volt tub is a large load, especially in a home that also runs central air and a pool pump. Before you buy, it helps to know whether your panel has the space and capacity. A load calculation answers that. In some older West Valley homes, a hot tub is the point where a panel upgrade makes sense.

Talk to a real person

Call (602) 999-2770 and a person answers, any hour. Have the model or manual handy. We will tell you what the tub needs and whether your panel can carry it, and you will hear the price before anyone drives out.

If you ever feel a tingle in hot tub water, get out without touching metal parts and do not use it until an electrician checks it.

Common questions

Can I plug a hot tub into any outdoor outlet?

Only a plug-in model, and only into a GFCI-protected outlet on a circuit that matches the manual. Never use an extension cord.

Where do I find my hot tub’s electrical requirements?

On the nameplate near the equipment and in the installation manual. The maker’s website often has the manual too.

Do I need a permit for a hot tub circuit?

A new hot tub circuit usually needs a permit and inspection. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.
