Commercial electricianTenant improvementsIndustrial controlsAluminum branch wiring installed from about 1965 to 1973 can be safe if its connections are properly repaired, but left as is it carries a higher fire risk. The CPSC found that homes with this wiring are 55 times more likely to have connections reach fire hazard conditions than copper-wired homes. The connections are the problem.
Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper as it heats and cools. Over the years, connections at outlets, switches and lights can loosen. A loose connection runs hot, and that heat can start a fire. The wire between connections is rarely the issue.
The CPSC recognizes three permanent repairs: rewiring with copper, COPALUM crimp connectors, and AlumiConn connectors at every aluminum connection in the home. All should be done by a qualified electrician. Ordinary twist-on connectors are not considered a permanent fix.
Do not open outlets or switches to look. If you think your home has aluminum wiring, call (602) 999-2770. A real person answers, and you will hear the price before anyone drives out. Our work carries a two-year warranty on labor and material.
You may see ALUMINUM or AL on cable in the garage or attic. An electrician can confirm without you opening anything.
No. The CPSC also recognizes COPALUM and AlumiConn connector repairs at every connection.
Large aluminum service and feeder wires are still used safely today. The concern is small branch circuit wiring from about 1965 to 1973.
