Commercial electricianTenant improvementsIndustrial controlsMany Sun City homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s, and Sun City West homes from 1978 on. Homes from those years may still have the original panel, outlets without GFCI protection, and in some cases aluminum branch wiring. A licensed electrician can check what you have and tell you what matters.
Sun City opened in 1960 as one of the first planned retirement communities in the country. Sun City West opened in 1978 and was built out over the next two decades. Both are well cared for, but the electrical systems in many homes are as old as the homes.
Wiring and panels from those years were built for a lighter load than most homes carry today. Central AC runs harder, kitchens have more appliances, and many residents now add golf cart chargers, spas, medical equipment or an EV charger.
The panel is the first thing to know about. Open the outer door and read the label. Panels from the 1960s and 1970s sometimes carry brands that electricians flag, such as Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) or Zinsco and Sylvania. Some homes also have a panel that is simply too small for today’s use.
If your panel is one of those brands, or it has no room for new breakers, it is worth having it looked at. Our guides on Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels explain why.
Most homes of this era are wired with copper. Some homes built from the mid 1960s to the early 1970s were wired with aluminum for the smaller circuits that feed outlets and lights. Aluminum branch wiring can overheat at connections if it was not installed with the right parts.
You can sometimes see the word ALUMINUM or AL printed on cable in the garage or attic. Do not open outlets or switches to look. An electrician can check safely.
Older homes often have outlets without GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoors. A GFCI outlet cuts power if it senses current leaking where it should not, such as through a person. Adding GFCI protection in wet areas is one of the simplest safety upgrades for an older home.
Some older homes also have two-prong outlets with no ground. These can be made safer, but the right fix depends on the wiring behind them.
These are the kinds of jobs people in older homes most often ask about.
You do not need tools to get a good picture of your system. Read the panel label for the brand and amp rating. Test each GFCI outlet with its TEST and RESET buttons. Notice whether breakers trip, lights flicker or outlets feel warm. Write down what you find.
Leave everything else to a licensed electrician. Do not remove covers, open outlets or replace breakers.

No. Many have been upgraded over the years. The only way to know is to read the label on your panel or have an electrician look.
Most homes of this era are copper. Some homes built in the mid 1960s to early 1970s used aluminum for branch circuits. An electrician can check without opening walls.
Not on its own. Age is a reason to have it checked, especially before adding big loads. Heat, smells, sparks and frequent tripping are the real warning signs.
