Zinsco Panels: What Sun City Homeowners Should Know

From Solana Electrical, AZ ROC #341966

The short answer

Zinsco panels, also sold under the Sylvania and GTE-Sylvania names, were installed in many homes in the 1960s and 1970s. Their known problems are breakers that may not trip and connections that can overheat where the breaker meets the panel. There was never a recall, but most electricians recommend replacing them.

What a Zinsco panel is

Zinsco was a panel and breaker maker whose equipment went into many homes in the 1960s and 1970s. The company was later sold, and the same design was marketed under the Sylvania and GTE-Sylvania names. If your panel carries any of those names, this guide applies to you.

Sun City opened in 1960, and many of its homes were built in the years Zinsco equipment was in use. That does not mean every older home here has one. It does mean it is worth looking at the label on your panel.

The known problems

Electricians and home inspectors have reported the same issues with these panels for years.

  • Breakers that do not trip. Independent testing found many Zinsco breakers failed to trip as the UL standard requires. A breaker that does not trip cannot protect the wiring from overheating.
  • Overheating at the bus. The breakers clip onto metal bars inside the panel called the bus. Over time that connection can loosen, arc and overheat.
  • Breakers that fuse in place. In some cases, heat at that connection has melted a breaker to the bus, so it can no longer trip at all.
  • Breakers that look off but are not. A worn breaker can sit in the off position while still passing power. That matters if anyone ever works on the circuit thinking it is dead.

Was there a recall?

No. There has never been a Zinsco recall. The problems are documented by inspectors, electricians and testing, not by a government recall. That is one reason people are surprised when an inspector or an insurance company raises it. No recall does not mean the panel has been cleared. It means no one ordered a fix.

How to tell if you have one

Open the outer panel door only, the same door you open to reset a breaker. Do not remove the inner cover. Look for these signs.

  • The name Zinsco, Sylvania or GTE-Sylvania on the door or the label
  • Thin breakers in several bright colors, often blue, red, green or tan handles
  • A label inside the door showing the panel layout and maker

Warning signs to act on

Whatever the brand, call an electrician soon if you notice any of these.

  • The panel or a breaker feels warm
  • A burning or hot plastic smell near the panel
  • Buzzing, crackling or popping sounds
  • A breaker that will not reset or keeps tripping
  • Scorch marks or discoloration on the panel

Why replacement is the usual answer

Replacement breakers for Zinsco panels are hard to find, and new breakers do not fix a worn or damaged bus. For that reason most electricians recommend replacing the whole panel.

A new panel also gives you room to grow. Many older panels are too small for central AC, a spa, a golf cart charger or an EV charger. When we replace a panel, we size it for what you use now and what you plan to add. The work needs a permit and an inspection.

Common questions

Does a Zinsco panel have to be replaced?

No law requires it, but most electricians recommend it because the breakers may not trip and the bus connections can overheat.

Will my insurance company care?

Some insurers ask about Zinsco and similar panels. Check with your agent, and ask an electrician to confirm what you have.

Can I tell by looking whether my Zinsco panel is safe?

Not reliably. A panel can look fine and still have breakers that would not trip. Heat, smells or scorch marks are clear warnings, but their absence is not proof the panel is sound.
