Question

Should I Replace Two-Prong Outlets?

From Solana Electrical, AZ ROC #341966

The short answer

Two-prong outlets usually mean the circuit has no ground wire. They are not automatically unsafe, but they offer less protection. The electrical code allows a few fixes: GFCI protection, which guards against shock, or adding a ground wire, which some electronics and surge protectors need. Never just swap in a three-prong outlet by itself.

What a two-prong outlet tells you

The round third hole on a modern outlet connects to a ground wire. It gives stray current a safe path back to the panel if something goes wrong in an appliance. Older homes were often wired without that ground, so they have two-prong outlets. Homes wired before grounded outlets became standard in the 1960s often still have some.

Options the code allows

When there is no ground wire at the box, the National Electrical Code lets an electrician replace a two-prong outlet with:

  • Another two-prong outlet
  • A GFCI outlet, marked No Equipment Ground
  • A three-prong outlet protected by a GFCI, marked GFCI Protected and No Equipment Ground
  • A properly grounded three-prong outlet, after a ground wire is added to the circuit

Which option fits

GFCI protection is a solid, lower-disruption choice for shock safety. It works without a ground wire because it watches the current going out and coming back. It does not give your electronics a ground, though, so a plug-in surge protector will not do its full job. For a computer, TV or medical equipment, adding a ground wire to that circuit is the better fix. If the home has many two-prong outlets, cloth-covered wiring or other older wiring, we may talk about rewiring part of the home.

What to avoid

  • Do not install a three-prong outlet with no ground and no GFCI. It looks grounded and is not.
  • Do not use cheater adapters or cut off the third prong of a plug.
  • Do not open outlets or wiring yourself.
  • Do not plug a space heater or other large appliance into an old, loose two-prong outlet. Worn outlets can overheat, and a plug that falls out easily is a sign the outlet should be replaced.

Common questions

Are two-prong outlets illegal?

No. Existing two-prong outlets are allowed, and the code allows replacing them with certain options.

Does a GFCI make a two-prong circuit grounded?

No. It protects against shock, but it does not add a ground.

Do I need to replace every two-prong outlet?

Not always. Many people start with kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoors and rooms with electronics.
