Outlets in older Sun City homes

Many homes in Sun City and Sun City West still have some two-prong outlets, or outlets that have been in the wall since the house was built. Two-prong outlets have no ground connection, and worn outlets can hold plugs loosely, which can lead to heat at the connection.

Swapping a two-prong outlet for a three-prong one is not always a simple swap. If there is no ground wire in the box, the right fix may be adding a ground or adding GFCI protection. We check each outlet and explain the options in plain words.

Panel upgrade questions

What is a GFCI outlet?

A GFCI outlet shuts off power in a fraction of a second if it senses current going where it should not, such as through water or a person. It is the outlet with the test and reset buttons, used in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoors.

What is AFCI protection?

AFCI protection watches for arcing, the kind of sparking that can happen in damaged or loose wiring, and shuts the circuit off. It is usually added at the panel as a special breaker, and sometimes at the outlet.

Can I just replace my two-prong outlets with three-prong ones?

Not unless a ground wire is present. A three-prong outlet with no ground looks safer than it is. We check for a ground and recommend the right fix, which may be adding a ground or adding GFCI protection.

Why does my GFCI outlet keep tripping?

It may be doing its job because of moisture or a faulty appliance, or the outlet itself may be worn. Unplug things one at a time to see if one is the cause. If it still trips, call us.
